At Frota Academy, it’s extremely important to us that our instructors and students follow proper academy etiquette.
The academy etiquette is a set of rules that must be followed so that every student in the academy has the optimal training, learning, and socializing experience.
If any of these rules are unclear, please ask your instructor for clarification — they will be happy to help.
To ensure the best training environment for everyone, we kindly request your support in adhering to the following rules:
Before Training:
- 1. Shoes must be removed when entering the academy. Sandals must be worn when off the mats.
- 2. All jewelry, piercings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. must be removed or taped.
- 3. Always show up clean and well-groomed. Fingernails and toenails must be trimmed.
- 4. Students are required to wear a clean Frota Academy uniform during training sessions. The uniform pants and top must be the same color. If you wear an athletic shirt under your gi, it must be all white or all black.
- 5. If you’re feeling unwell, consult a doctor and do not attend training until you are healthy again.
- 6. Don’t be late. Arrive on time for classes to maximize your learning experience and minimize disruption to the group. If you are late and class has already started, wait next to the mats until your instructor asks you to join.
During Training:
- Do not step onto the mats without the instructor’s permission.
- When walking onto the mats, bow facing the center. When walking off of the mats, bow facing the center.
- Greet all training partners individually after entering the mats. Higher belts are greeted first.
- Classes begin and end with a formal bow with the instructor with students lined up in descending belt rank.
- Avoid unnecessary speech or disrupting the instructor. Individual questions can be asked after class or at the request of the instructor.
- Maintain a respectful posture during instruction and training.
- The gi must be worn at all times. When tying the belt, face the wall. The belt represents your progress. Keep it on.
- For safety reasons, if you need to leave the mat or leave early you must inform your instructor.

- Bow to your partner before and after sparring. During sparring, avoid aggression and control your emotions at all times.
- Photos and videos are prohibited without the consent of the instructor.
- Absolutely no inappropriate language.
- No shoes, food or drink on the mat.
- No cell phones on the mats.
